Research from our very own University of Minnesota, states on their website:
“A standard display monitor contains from 4 to 8 pounds of lead, which lines the glass cathode ray tube, or CRT, as a user shield against radiation. There is less lead in a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), but the latter typically contain mercury in the fluorescent lamps used for back lighting.
Lead and minute amounts of mercury, a highly toxic and environmentally persistent metal, appear in the computer’s printed wiring boards, switches, relays, and batteries. Cadmium compounds, metals suspected as persistent carcinogens, appear in a computer’s batteries, wiring boards, and plastic stabilizers. And plastics, the computers No.1 ingredient, are pesky: They typically have little value yet require difficult separation for an expensive recycling process that is itself toxic.” – U of M Hazardous Waste Management Guidebook
